(20 febbraio 2018) The conference organised by the archaeologist Simone Foresta (in Italian with German simultaneous interpretation) will take place on Thursday February 22nd, 19:00 at the Italian Institute of Culture of Hamburg. It is part of a series of events called "Opere d'arte che raccontano città". These events are a journey through Italian cities from the perspective of an art historian or archaeologist speaking about a work of art or a group of artworks. The conference will present the new image and the new meanings of the Ara Pacis Augustae. To a modern observer, the altar requested by the Senate to celebrate the return of Emperor Augustus from Gaul and Spain in 13 BC appears solemn and suggestive in all its whiteness. Recent studies on ancient polychromy have however revealed the original aspect of the monument and found that each portion of marble was coloured. (red)
