La morte di Simoncelli

Il 23 ottobre 2011 Marco Simoncelli, giovane pilota di Moto GP perdeva la vita in un incidente tanto fatale e tragico, quanto divenuto tristemente famoso. Una morte in diretta che lasciò sgomento non solo l’ambiente del circuito ma anche il grande pubblico italiano e internazionale. Basti pensare che alla cerimonia funebre, trasmessa in tempo reale in tv, parteciparono oltre 25.000 persone, mentre un minuto di raccoglimento in sua memoria venne proclamato dal Coni per tutte le manifestazioni sportive, esempio seguito anche dalla Camera dei deputati e da varie istituzioni locali. Il Milan, squadra di cui era tifoso, giocò con il lutto al braccio la successiva partita di campionato. Nel Gran Premio d'India di Formula 1 svoltosi la settimana seguente alla tragedia, vari piloti onorarono Simoncelli apponendo il numero 58 sui loro caschi e sulle loro monoposto, e il vincitore della gara Sebastian Vettel gli dedicò il successo. Il motomondiale ricordò prima del Gran Premio della Comunità Valenciana, ultimo appuntamento della stagione, quando i piloti di tutte le classi, oltre ad apporre il numero 58 su caschi, tute e moto, effettuarono insieme un giro di pista commemorativo dietro alla Honda di Simoncelli, guidata per l'occasione dall'ex iridato Kevin Schwantz, amico del pilota e idolo della sua infanzia.
