A study recently published in the journal "Cell Metabolism" has identified specific molecules of beta pancreatic cells that drive the self-destruction of cells in the presence of type 1 diabetes (T1D). This discovery offeres completely new insights into the mechanisms regulating diabetes 1 and opens up new avenues for identifying therapeutic strategies through vaccine development. The study, led by Roberto Mallone in collaboration with R. Scharfmann, of the Cochin Institute in Paris, and with Professor Francesco Dotta's team from the University of Siena, was conducted in the framework of the international network INNODIA and nPOD, with the participation of the Centre for Diabetes Research led by D. Eizirik (Free University of Brussels), P. Marchetti from the University of Pisa, and of the ESPCI mass spectrometry laboratory in Paris (J. Vinh and Y. Verdier).
