Futura, a project of the national agency for green energy (Enea), is an innovative prototype of an environmentally sustainable sailboat with hydrogen-powered electric propulsion. It is 6 meters long, weighs 600 kilograms, can accommodate up to three passengers (in addition to the skipper), and has a range of 5 hours at a speed of 2.5 knots (about 4 kilometers per hour). Futura is equipped with a 1 kW fuel cell that converts the hydrogen contained in a ready-to-use cylinder into zero-emission electricity. It also has a rechargeable battery via two photovoltaic panels that allows you to extend the autonomy up to 2 hours. Linde Gas Italia provided the user-friendly cylinder in "returnable vacuum" mode, while Arco-FC, an Italian company specializing in the sector, provided the fuel cell. The demand for boats with zero-emission propulsion is rising sharply in Italy. As a result, Enea plans to replicate the prototype in different types and larger sizes of boats, installing micro-wind, hydro-generation, new storage devices, and electrolyzed systems.
