The government has enacted four emergency measures to enable Italy to deal with a potential total disruption of gas supplies by Russia and the autumn energy crisis. 1) The heating temperature for buildings should be reduced by one degree. In factories, the maximum temperature will be 17 degrees, with a two-degree tolerance; in all other buildings, the maximum temperature will be 19. Restrictions will also be placed on the duration of the heating, which will be shortened by 15 days for the ignition period – delaying the start date by 8 days and bringing the end date forward by 7 days – and by one hour per day. 2) The objective is also to increase electricity production using fuels other than natural gas, particularly coal and bio-liquids. 3) A series of virtuous behaviors that may help reduce energy consumption are recommended. You will have to take shorter showers, turn down the heat after boiling water when cooking, pay attention to when dishwashers and washing machines run and how full they are, and turn on light bulbs less often. 4) By winter, natural gas storage levels must reach 90 percent.
