Pandemics, conflicts, and political upheaval have increased Italians' concern for others. In 2022, 38 percent of citizens report making at least one donation, 10 percentage points higher than in each of the previous two years. The average donation amount increases to 118 euros from 90 euros in 2021 and 77 euros in 2020. 71% of Italians have given blood at least once in their lives. Among the causes supported over the past year, medical-scientific research (45% vs. 37% in 2021) and humanitarian emergencies (28 % vs. 15 % in 2021) are gaining support. Donations for the preservation of artistic heritage continue to fall behind (3% vs. 5% in 2021). The importance of trust as a criterion for selecting a supported organization increases significantly: 61% of respondents say they have donated to an organization they trust, up from 44% in 2021. According to Walden Lab's survey, nearly 8 out of 10 Italians today (79%) understand what a post-mortem philanthropic legacy is, and the percentage of those who do it has risen to 26% by 2022.
