The Ministries of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry Policies, as well as Economic Development, intervened to oppose the Republic of Cyprus's request for a product known as "balsamic vinegar." In this sense, The Ministry of Agricultural, Food, and Forestry Policies has developed a number of precise arguments to prevent the implementation of the Cypriot law, which allows the marketing of condiments made from vinegar with the addition of must, concentrated must, and the like, as balsamic vinegar. These arguments include the protection recognized also at the European level of its PDO and PGI productions (which bind the production of a product to a specific geographical area), the need not to create confusion in consumers between high quality/standard products with others of lesser value, also citing copious case law. The Consortium for the Protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI expressed satisfaction with the prompt initiative, with the hope that the responsible bodies will be able to meet the tight deadlines to resolve the issue and ensure respect for one of the most venerable Made in Italy food products.
