From wheat to bread, prices rise more than tenfold due to the record rising price for energy, feed and fertilizer triggered by the war in Ukraine and distortions within the supply chains that drain citizens' pockets and harm farmers. Coldiretti denounces the issue in commenting on the Eurostat analysis according to which the cost of bread has never been so high in the EU - the average increase in August has been of 18% within the Union, compared to the same month of 2021. According to the Coldiretti analysis on ISTAT inflation data in August, households will spend over 900 million euros more in 2022 than in the previous year on the product most present on the Italian tables. The impact of the cost of wheat on the price of bread remains marginal, equal to about 10% on average, as also shown by the extreme variability of retail prices along the Peninsula, while that of wheat is directly influenced by international prices. If in Milan a 1-kilo loaf costs 4.46 euros, in Rome it drops to 2.92 euros; in Bologna the price is 4.91 euros, in Palermo the average is 3.89 euros per kilo, while in Naples it reaches 2.16 euros, according to the data of the Price Observatory of the Ministry of Economic Development in July.
