The symptoms of Long Covid are different in girls compared to boys. The most serious consequences of SARS-COV-2 infection are more frequent in boys than in girls, including the risk of severe Multi-Systemic Inflammatory Syndrome. With regards to the indirect effects of the pandemic, young girls have been severely affected, especially in low-income countries. The gender differences in the impact of Covid in the pediatric age is the subject of an analysis, conducted through four different aspects, presented to the Congress of the International Society of Gender Medicine, held in Padua, where there has been the election of Anna Maria Moretti as the first Italian president. "The impact of the pandemic was also relevant for children and the data show that it was different between males and females," explains Danilo Buonsenso, professor of Pediatrics at the Catholic University of Rome and researcher at the Department of Women's and Children's Health, Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli IRCCS in Rome. The severe forms of Covid do not affect males and females in the same way. According to a study published in Pediatrics (January 2022) examined 3,106 hospitalized children, the forms of serious disease were in total 691 of which 384 (55.6%) in males and 307 (44.4%) in females. This is confirmed by a study published on JAMA network Open (February 2022): out of a total of 167,762 children, it was observed that severe forms of Covid-19, which were 1,423 in total, were in 56% of cases dependent on male children (for a total of 791) compared to 44% of girls (631).
