Due to economic difficulties and high prices in the shopping cart, Italians have reduced their purchases of fruit and vegetables by 11% compared to the previous year, to the lowest level since the turn of the century with 2.6 billion kilograms. This is what emerges from the analysis of Coldiretti Filiera Italia and Unaproa on household spending in the first half of the year on the occasion of the summit of the National Union of Fruit and Vegetable And Citrus Producers on rising prices and the consumption crisis, based on data from CSO Italy/Gfk Italia. Italians have decreased their consumption of zucchini by 16%, tomatoes by 12%, potatoes by 9%, carrots by 7%, salads by 4%, and oranges by an astounding 8%. Only the fourth range is expanding, such as salads in bags, whose sales increased by 7% in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.
