"How we approach autocracies will determine our ability to shape our shared future for decades to come. The solution is a combination of candor, consistency, and determination. We must be transparent and explicit about our societies' foundational values. I am referring to our belief in democracy and the rule of law, our respect for human rights, and our dedication to international solidarity. These ideals should clearly and predictably guide our foreign policy, and I emphasize predictably. When a red line is drawn, it must be enforced. When we make a promise, we must adhere to it. Autocracies thrive by taking advantage of our reluctance. We should avoid ambiguity in order to avoid future regret." In New York for the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, the President of the Council, Mario Draghi, attended the 57th Annual Award Dinner, where he received the World Statesman Award 2022. "The Russian invasion of Ukraine risks ushering in a new era of polarization, which we have not seen since the end of the Cold War, says Draghi. And adds "We must be willing to cooperate, as long as this does not mean compromising our fundamental principles. This week marks the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly. I hope there will be a future in which Russia decides to return to the same 1945 rules."
