The quality of tap water in Italy is among the best in Europe, yet 62% of families (according to the Censis Institute) prefer bottled water, spending about 240 euros a year. On average, each Italian drinks 208 liters of bottled water in a year: we are first in Europe, where the average is 106 liters, and second in the World after Mexico (244 liters). It was the subject of a conference at the Water Festival, organized by Utilitalia (the Federation of water, environmental and energy companies) in collaboration with SMAT, a company that operates in the field of water service in Turin. Every day in Italy we use 30 million plastic bottles and 7 million glass bottles: as a result, 13.5 billion bottles become waste to be managed in a year. On the occasion, a research conducted by the company Interceptor on a representative sample of 8,600 respondents was also presented. The analysis shows that, compared to 47% who claim to drink tap water, as many as 80% consume bottled water: 52% always and 28% occasionally. In general, bottled water is rated more qualified and reliable than tap water; yet only 14% learn about tap water quality and analysis through the municipality's invoice, publications or the operator's website.
