"The protest of the Neapolitan bakers is dramatic. A social conflict is underway that turns back the hands of history. The demands of the category must be matched by a concrete initiative of the Government, but also of the regions, on expensive energy and wheat. If there is no bread on the tables of Italians, it is like being at war. This is an emergency that must be addressed immediately by the Government". Giovanni Centrella, general manager of CONFIAP, the Confederazione delle Imprese, delle Attività professionali e del Lavoro Autonomo (in english, the Confederation of Enterprises, Professional Activities, and Self-Employment), commented on the event that Naples' bakers held yesterday with these words. In the square, with a coffin and funeral posters, it is announced that "the campania bakery has been extinguished after years of sacrifice thanks to the State." The demonstration, planned by Unipan Confcommercio Campania, has also seen bakers from other regions of the Center-South take to the streets. Bakers have reported electricity and gas bill increases of 700 to 800 percent, with bills increasing from 1,000 to 7,000 to 8,000 euros in August.
