After two years of epidemic, the rise of the foreign population in Italy has resumed: as of January 1, 2022, there were 5,193,669 legally resident foreign residents. Lombardy's dominance among the regions of residence is confirmed, followed by Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, and Veneto, while Tuscany overcomes Piemonte in fifth position. This is highlighted in the latest issue of Caritas Italiana's and Fondazione Migrantes' Immigration Report. The picture of nations is mostly unchanged: Romanians (about 1,080,000 people, 20.8% of the total) continue to dominate the population, followed by Albanians (8.4%), Moroccans (8.3%), Chinese (6.4%), and Ukrainians (4.8%). Foreign citizens holding a residence permit have also increased (as of 1 January 2022, there are 3,921,125, compared to 3,3 million in 2021), as have the number of new residence permits issued in the year: during 2021 there were 275 thousand, +159% compared to 2020 (105,700); in particular, there has been a surge in work reasons, undoubtedly as a result of the government's 2020 sanatorium procedure. In 2020, there were 118 thousand citizenship measures, which is an increase of 4% from the previous year. There are now more than 1.5 million foreigners with Italian citizenship.
