In Italy there is a sharp increase in digital payments. In the first half of 2022, transactions reached 182 billion euros, an increase of +22% over the same period of 2021. This is shown by the data of the Innovative Payments Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano, according to which if consumption growth, considering the inflationary effect, will not suffer sudden slowdowns. Digital payments at the end of the year could reach a value between 390 and 405 billion, representing more than 40% of the total spent by Italians, getting closer and closer to cash (now below the threshold of 50%). According to data from the European Central Bank, Italy has recorded one of the highest growth values of electronic transactions in Europe (+41% against an average of +18%). The transaction of prepaid cards grew by +19%, that of debit cards by +24%, while the credit card category, after 2021 still with very limited growth due to the medium-term effects of Covid, benefits from the recovery of high value consumption for services, tourism and corporate travel, with a growth of +21%.
