80% of the Italian steel industry is almost completely decarbonised. In Europe, the average is between 40 and 60%. According to Antonio Gozzi, President of Federacciai and CEO of the industrial giant Duferco in Brescia, "our steel supply chain is also a champion of circularity. We are the largest circular economy machine in Europe. There is no other European industrial activity that consumes so much recycled material in terms of volume and tonnage. The Italian steel production model is structurally predisposed to the eco-sustainable transition. Basically, it recovers waste, like the iron already used". The 1,800 Italian steel companies in 2021 had a turnover of over 79 billion euros, a jump of 61% compared to 2020. 2021 was a record year, due to the sudden recovery in demand after the 2020 stop, due to Covid. Over the same period, the net income of the sector increased tenfold, from €310 million to €3.5 billion. The Italian steel sector is in second place in Europe, after Germany, and in eleventh place in the world, for tons produced. The world leader in production is China, the second producer is India. Between 2020 and 2021 the steel industry in Italy increased production by 19.7%, the highest growth percentage, followed by the United States, +18.3%, India, +17.8%, Japan, +15.8%.
