For the first time, a woman has been appointed to the World Stroke Organization's board of directors (WSO). Valeria Caso was elected at the most recent WSO congress in Singapore. Already President of the European Stroke organization from 2016 to 2018, Valeria Caso - a neurologist at the University of Perugia and the Stroke unit at the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Perugia - has been appointed treasurer of the World Stroke Organization. Her work focuses primarily on women: "They are more vulnerable to stroke and can suffer from it even in childbearing age. One in every five women will have a stroke during her lifetime. This disease kills twice as many people as breast cancer " she elaborated. Dr. Caso is one of the authors of the "European Guidelines" for the treatment of stroke patients during pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause; a study prepared by the European Stroke Organization specifies the clinical and pharmacological therapies to be used in female patients in these categories. "Women are more at risk and can be victims of stroke even when they are childbearing age," the doctor added. "After the age of 80, women are 20% more at risk than men, and female mortality is generally higher."
