After 18 years, there is an Italian lead for the ESPO, (European sea ports organization). Zeno D’Agostino, Veronese manager to the guide of the port of Trieste for seven years and former vice president from 2020 to 2022, has been named president of ESPO unanimously of the representatives of the 23 member countries of the association, during the general assembly held to Brussels. D’Agostino, who succeeds to the Finn Annaleena Makila, will be flanked by vice-presidents Daan Schalck, Belgian, to head of the North Sea Port (the agency that unites the ports of Gent and Zeeland), and Ansis Zeltiņs, Latvian, to the summits of the port of Riga. The only previous case was the election in 2004 of Giuliano Gallanti, who had led the ports of Genoa and Livorno. Founded in 1993, based in the Belgian capital within the "Port House" building, ESPO is the privileged point of contact between the ports and the European Union. It represents the interests of the port world, promotes the common requests of seaports, and is engaged in dialogue with European stakeholders in the sector, including workers' representatives. Approximately 3.3 billion tons of goods and 400 million passengers pass through European seaports every year.
