In 2020, 28.9 million tons of municipal waste were produced in Italy. Approximately 3.1 million were treated in regions other than those of production. This is what emerges from the study "Urban waste, current plant needs and to 2035", carried out by Utilitalia (the Federation of water, environmental and energy companies), now in its third edition and presented yesterday at the Ecomondo Fair in Rimini. The waste flow travels mainly from the Central-South to the North. The North imported about 1.6 million tons from the areas of the Central-South, which represents 12% of the waste production of the whole North, which already today, thanks to its plants, is almost able to achieve (10.4%) the targets for landfill planned by the EU for 2035. The Centre is forced to export 16% (1.0 million tons) of its waste production, although it is already starting to landfill an extremely high percentage, equal to 41.7%, but not able to guarantee all the demand. The South, on the other hand, exported 1.1 million tons, which corresponds to 18% of its waste production (mainly organic) but only due to the high availability of landfill, now used for a high percentage, equal to 36.7%.
