For some time now, young Italians have not felt well-liked by their country and by their territories of origin, more and more pushed to seek their fortune elsewhere. The way abroad is presented to them as the only choice to be taken for the resolution of all kinds of problems (autonomy, serenity, work, parenting). And so, we are faced with an Italy demographically in free fall if it resides and operates within national borders and another Italy, increasingly active and dynamic, which however looks at those same borders from afar. This is what emerges from the 17th edition of the Italians in the World Report of the Migrantes Foundation, presented yesterday morning in Rome. As of January 1, 2022, the Italian citizens registered in the Registry of Italians residing abroad are 5,806,068, 9.8% of the more than 58.9 million Italians residing in Italy. The departures for "expatriation" that took place over the course of 2021 were 83,781, the lowest figure recorded since 2014, when they were more than 94 thousand. 78.6% of those who left Italy for expatriation in 2021 went to Europe, 14.7% to America, specifically Latin America (61.4%), and the remaining 6.7% it was divided between the Asian continent, Africa and Oceania.
