A new sculpture in St. Peter's Square draws attention on the plight of the homeless. It was inaugurated by the Pope yesterday morning, just before the regular catechesis of the Wednesday general audience. The title "Sheltering" was selected for the life-size bronze sculpture depicting a homeless man protected by a blanket drawn by a dove in flight. The unveiling of the artwork comes just before next Sunday's (6th) World Day of the Poor celebration. The sculpture is the creation of Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz. His piece "Angels Unawares," devoted to migrants and refugees, was put in St. Peter's Square in 2019, and was also blessed by the Holy Father. "Sheltering" is intended to draw attention to the global issue of homelessness and to stimulate practical solutions.
