Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni met with Xi Jinping, the President of the People's Republic of China, outside of the G20 Summit. A friendly encounter, they report from Palazzo Chigi. Meloni underlined the Italian government's intention in fostering mutual economic interests, as well as growing Italian exports to China. At the same time, Xi and Meloni highlighted the ancient tie between Italy and China, two millennial civilizations, highlighting the success of the Year of Italy-China Culture. President Xi recalled the messages he and President Mattarella had exchanged at the time. Relations between the EU and China were also discussed, with hopes for their revival. President Meloni emphasized the significance of restarting all forms of communication, including those concerning human rights. It was agreed that the most serious and important global and regional problems must be solved by working together well. Meloni and Xi were particularly concerned about the conflict in Ukraine and its repercussions. They agreed that every diplomatic initiative should be encouraged to resolve the crisis and prevent it from escalating.
