Inflation continues to rise. In October, the national consumer price index recorded a +3.4% monthly and +11.8% on an annual basis (from +8.9% the previous month). The strong acceleration of inflation on a trend basis is mainly due to the prices of energy goods (whose growth increased from +44.5% in September to +71.1%) and to a lesser extent to the prices of food goods (from +11.4% to +13.1%), both processed (from +11.4% to +13.3%) and unprocessed (from +11.0% to +12.9%), and other goods (from +4.0% to +4.6%). On the other hand, prices for recreational, cultural and personal care services are slowing down (from +5.7% in September to +5.2%). Only going back to June 1983 (when there was a trend change of +13.0%) it is possible to find an annual growth in the prices of the shopping cart higher than that of October 2022. The geographical differences that emerge from the statistics published by ISTAT are also interesting. Prices are higher in the islands (+14.2%) and the North-East (+12%), while increases are lower in the Centre (+11.6%), the South (+11.5%) and the North-West (+11.3%). Among the capitals and municipalities with more than 150 thousand inhabitants, the highest inflation is observed in Catania (+15.6%), Palermo (+14.9%) and Messina (+14.1%), followed by Ravenna (+13.9%), Genoa (+13.4) and Bologna (+13.2), while the smallest trend variations are recorded in Potenza (+9.1%) and Aosta (+8.7%).
