The number of Italian films that have also obtained circulation abroad is growing, with a progression in the last five years ranging from an estimated 43-52 in 2017 to 96-118 in 2021. These are the figures from a study prepared by eMedia for Anica, the national organization of the film and audiovisual industries led by Francesco Rutelli. There are movies made for the Cinema Room, for linear TV, and for VOD. The numbers show that between 2017 and 2021, Italy made 1,130 films in the three main categories—fiction, nonfiction, and animation—for an average of 226 films per year. Most of the titles were fiction, which made up 68% of the total, while the number of documentaries has grown to 31% over the years. Between 2017 and 2021, Italian producers and foreign operators signed a total of 209 agreements. Of these, 190 (or 70%) were with partners in Europe. France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Belgium are the main countries that work together on production. Over the four-year period 2017-2020, the overall economic value provided via overseas cooperation is estimated to be roughly 92 million euros. More than twice as much money as was raised in the four years before. This is about 41 million euros. So, the increase is a net of 124%.
