Four appetizers followed by first and second courses, and the traditional birthday cake. This was the typical Piedmontese menu for Pope Francis' visit to Asti yesterday to celebrate his cousin Carla’s birthday. The menu was served in the Bishopric of the municipality to the Pontiff, to 27 of his relatives and to Bishop Marco Prastaro. For the curious, the appetizers included Russian salad, peppers with bagna cauda, veal with tuna sauce and knife cut raw meat. Then there was agnolotti del plin with roast sauce followed by roast with peas and carrots. The ritual greetings were accompanied by a multilayered hazelnut cake. The choice of wines was also varied: Grignolino, Barbera, Chardonnay, sparkling wine and Moscato. The table service was carried out by youngsters with Down’s syndrome of the Ethical Hotel of Asti and the lunch was prepared by Argo Cooperative and PIAM Onlus Association, which deals with the reintegration of trafficked women. The birthday cake was instead prepared by the Hotel School of Agliano d’Asti.
