Despite the growth of renewable resources, coal is still a major source of energy in Italy. The installed capacity of solar and wind power plants will expand from 5 GW in 2008 to over 33 GW in 2021, representing more than half of the total renewable capacity of 60 GW. In 2012, 77 GW of thermoelectric capacity was built, with 77% coming from natural gas plants and 17% from coal facilities that will be decommissioned by 2025 (biomass and fuel oil plants account for 3% of the total). Therefore, we are a substantial distance from both the decarbonization objectives set for 2030 and 2050 and the other "complementary" goals, such as the expansion of renewable energy sources and the reduction of consumption. This is an overview of the Electricity Market Report 2022 prepared by the Energy & Strategy department of the Politecnico di Milano School of Management. The medium-to-long-term objectives for decarbonization, renewables, and energy efficiency have steadily increased in the previous year, as has the adoption of new mechanisms that will make climate neutrality a reality by 2050. In addition, as a result of the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, a draft of a 210 billion euro investment plan (so-called "RepowerEU") was presented, with which Europe intends to cease importing fossil fuels from Russia within five years, with imports reduced by two-thirds by the end of this year.
