The economic crisis, accompanied by soaring inflation and arbitrary price increases, threatens to reduce to absolute poverty a significant portion of Italy's more than 23 million retirees, who get an average of 13,753 euros per year, or 1,146 euros per month. According to a study by the Center for Health Economics Studies of Senior Italia FederAnziani, based on ISTAT data and the CONFINDUSTRIA report "the economy of the third age of 2020," the spending of people over 65 is made up of two main parts: food (19%) and non-food (81%) which in monthly absolute values add up to 217 euros for food and 998.26 euros for all non-food, for a total of 1,215 euros per month, which is well above the average amount. Within this 81%, there are still three significant costs: 40% for housing and utilities, or 458.4 euros per month; 9% for transportation and automobiles, or 103.14 euros per month; and 7% for health, or 80 euros per month.
