The recording of a phone call between Cardinal Angelo Becciu and Pope Francis was transmitted yesterday in the Multipurpose Hall of the Vatican Museums, during the thirty-seventh audience for the management of the funds of the Holy See. Those present for the interrogation of the "key witness", Monsignor Alberto Perlasca, listened to the complete audio in which the cardinal asked the Pope to confirm that he had authorized the payments to the manager Cecilia Marogna for the release of a Colombian nun kidnapped in Mali, ten days after his resignation from the Gemelli Hospital and three days before the beginning of the trial. The over five minutes phone call had taken place on July 24, 2021, at 14.55, in the cardinal's apartment in Piazza del Sant'Uffizio, live and recorded by a relative of Becciu, Maria Luisa Zambrano, in the presence of an unidentified man. The "find", which was presented by the Promoter of Justice Alessandro Diddi, was found right from Zambrano’s phone by the Guardia di Finanza of Oristano as part of an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office of Sassari on the management of the Spes Cooperative led by Becciu's brother and on the family of the cardinal. The documentation was sent by letter rogatory to the Office of the Promoter of Justice and illustrated yesterday in the courtroom by Diddi, who explained that this and other material have now activated a new investigation in the Vatican for "criminal association", also involving Cardinal Becciu.
