In the last 50 years, almost one in three (-30%) agricultural land has disappeared due to abandonment and cementing, which have reduced the capacity to absorb rain and put the environment and the safety of citizens at risk with landslides and floods. This is what Coldiretti denounces in reference to the last wave of bad weather that has hit vast areas of the country with clouds and landslides. In Italy there is a trend towards a tropicalisation of the climate. The last waves of clouds and hail fell on dry soils, which failed to absorb water, causing landslides and ground instability. According to ISPRA data, in Italy there are over 9 out of 10 municipalities (93.9% of the total) with parts of their territory in areas at hydrogeological risk. The Peninsula, already fragile due to cementation and abandonment, records the multiplication of extreme events that this year have grown by +50% compared to the same period of 2021; according to the analysis of Coldiretti on ESWD and ISAC CNR data compared to the first ten months, 2022 is also classified so far as the warmest year ever in Italy, with a temperature almost one degree (+1.07 degrees) higher than the historical average.
