Following the halt imposed by the epidemic, the tourist industry is undeniably recovering. Italians have begun to travel again, and the most popular places stay inside the country's boundaries, highlighting two points: on the one hand, prudence remains, and on the other, the money available for vacations is restricted. ISTAT captured this image, showing a slight improvement in tourism in 2021. The figures for 2022 are not yet available, but based on the claims of individual operators, it can be concluded that the tourist industry has continued to recover from the losses incurred in 2020 as a result of the pandemic. In 2021, Italians took 41,6 million journeys with a combined 281,500,000 overnight stays, as reported by the Institute of Statistics. In terms of the number of trips, these figures are close to those of 2020 and thus distant from those of 2019 (-40%), while those linked to the number of nights spent traveling indicate an increase of 22% (compared to 2019, there is still a fall of 30%). Yet, in the past three years, Italian tourism has experienced not only quantitative and economic but also structural changes. The travel industry is undergoing a similar period of substantial digital upheaval as other industries. The Politecnico di Milano found that even though online sales in the transportation industry now account for two-thirds of the total, they are still slightly below pre-Covid levels (down 6% compared to 2019).
