The number of Italy’s inventions continues to grow in Europe: +2% is the increase in patent applications published by the EPO (European Patent Office) in 2021 compared to 2020, with 90 more patents. In detail, as shown in the latest analysis carried out by Unioncamere-Dintec consortia, pharmaceutical technologies, biotechnology and chemistry have held the lion's share in the past year, registering an increase of 9.5% compared to the previous year. Overall, the Italian patent applications published by the EPO in 2021 are 4,555. To the latter must then be added the applications submitted but not yet published, which outline the growth data of last year at +6.5%, compared to an average of +2.3% recorded by the European Union. The analysis by technological macro-classes of the 4,555 European patent applications published in 2021 shows that, thanks to extraordinary growth, chemical-pharmaceutical technologies rack up 955 patents and concentrate 21% of Italy's innovative capacity in Europe. Subsequently, there are electrical and electronic technologies, which grew by 4.8% compared to the previous year, with 499 inventions published. In absolute terms, however, the largest contribution to Italian patenting is always that of mechanical and transport technologies: 1,790 published patent applications, with a slight decrease compared to 2020 (-0.8%). Another 14% concerns all measurement and control technologies and instruments.
