Boris Godunov by Modest Mussorgsky, led by maestro Riccardo Chailly and directed by Kasper Holten, began the season of Milan's Teatro la Scala last night to 13 minutes of ovation. Both President Sergio Mattarella of Italy and the Russian bassist Ildar Abdrazakov received standing ovations. As was the case the previous year, the audience offered the Head of State a standing ovation that was followed by four minutes of applause. To reiterate, the Godunov was a smashing success. Result surely not taken for granted also for the controversies that followed the creation of the Russian opera. But as the curtain lifted, all the debate gone. The 1919 spectators were enthusiastic (for a total collection of 2,497,019 euros) (for a total collection of 2,497,019 euros). Maestro Chailly is enthusiastic: "The response of the crowd was breathtaking. After a moment of stunned silence—fitting for the monumental nature of this music—the audience began to applaud enthusiastically. After the applause, it was quite enjoyable to hear the audience shouting. There was a really profound collective engagement. I'm happy". (Photo Rai)
