Christmas is approaching and the traditional tree of Piazza Venezia has returned to Rome. For this year, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu, the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri and the CEO of the ACEA services company Fabrizio Palermo have launched a campaign to promote actions that citizens of all ages can take during the Christmas holidays in order to create a sustainable and inclusive community, where no one is left behind. For the first time, in fact, the tree lights are generated by solar energy. The system allows a reduction of CO2 emissions of 17.55 kg/day which, for the entire duration of the shaft ignition, are equivalent to 526 kg of CO2. As part of the campaign, FAO, together with Rome Capital and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has invited citizens and visitors to do their part to address a number of challenges at a time when, in many parts of the world, people – especially the most vulnerable – face high costs of energy, food and other primary goods.
