There are 8.5 million Italians who waited until the final week of the year to purchase presents for others or for themselves to place beneath the tree. This is according to a Coldiretti / Ixe' poll on the buying behavior during the final weekend before Christmas, which was also influenced by the thirteenth monthly salary. According to Coldiretti / Ixe ', more than one-third of Italians (35%) who get the thirteenth paycheck starting from December 15 will spend it mostly for Christmas expenditures, while a nearly comparable amount (36%) will use it to pay bills, mortgages, payments, and taxes such as the municipal property tax (IMU).
