Despite still being 26% lower than in 2019, the year before the epidemic, 2022 saw a remarkable comeback in tourism, with the number of foreign visitors to Italy almost doubling (+94%). This bolsters the optimistic predictions for the Christmas holidays. This is what is shown by Coldiretti's examination of the BANKITALIA statistics for the first nine months of the year, which saw a total of 55.98 million international arrivals. Almost three-quarters of the foreign visitors to Italy are from the European Union. However, the United Kingdom (with 3.6 million visitors) and the United States (with 2.2 million visitors) also make up a significant portion of the total. While 41% of international visitors choose to visit Italy for vacations, others also did so to shop, see family and friends, or for other reasons. The rising trend in arrivals is supported by the fact that foreigner expenditure in the first nine months of was around 33.4 billion dollars, compared to 15.5 billion dollars in the same period of the previous year, and is very near to 35.5 billion dollars in 2019.
