Claudio Descalzi, CEO of ENI, and Stefano Venier, CEO of SNAM, have signed an agreement establishing an equal joint venture to develop and operate the first phase of the Ravenna CO2 capture and storage (CCS) project. The agreement also calls for the continuation of research and preparatory work for future stages of development. The Ravenna CCS Project's first phase is collecting 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from ENI's Casalborsetti natural gas treatment facility (Ravenna). The CO2 will be piped to a platform before being injected into a spent gas field. Through an instantly accessible, highly efficient and effective technical method, the initiative provides a crucial step toward meeting the decarbonization demands of steel mills, cement plants, ceramics and chemical industries, and more generally of the "hard to penetrate" sectors by bolstering the infrastructures and capabilities already existent in the region. With an estimated total of over 500 new jobs in the project's first phase alone, the planned activities will provide new employment prospects.
