The Board of Public Works at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has approved two projects with a total value of 4.5 billion euros of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Italian Railway Network), leader of the Infrastructure Pole of the FS Group, destined to imprint an accelerated development of a high-speed railway in the South. The first technical-economic feasibility project for which the Ministry led by Matteo Salvini has obtained the Council's positive opinion concerns the first 33 kilometers of railway between Battipaglia and Romagnano of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway, worth 2.7 billion euros, financed with the resources of the National Resilience Plan. Lot 1A Battipaglia-Romagnano, which was already the subject of public debate, will have beneficial effects on the mobility of the area and will create a connection between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts. The second project approved by the Board of Public Works of MIT concerns the Fiumetorto – Lercara section, which is a branch of the Palermo-Catania line and the last functional lot with a value of 1.8 billion euros. The tenders will be published by the end of the year with award by the end of May 2023 and the start of the subsequent executive design and works from June 2023. Both projects are an integral part of the TEN-T network corridor "Scandinavia – Mediterranean" that connects Palermo to Helsinki.
