On the tables of Italians at Christmas there will be clams, for which there is a price increase of 15% compared to the same period of 2021, which is driven by a high level of demand against a fairly stable catch. Anchovies are slightly down (-5.9% compared to 2021), thanks to a good availability of the product. Quotes are very low for shrimp (-38.9% compared to the same period in 2021) since, during this autumn, the fishing of the product went particularly well. The high availability has therefore caused a substantial decrease in the price, bringing it to around 16.00 euros/kg, with prices even lower in the previous weeks. The situation is the opposite for salmon and eel, for which the increase in the energy costs of livestock and fodder has caused a respective increase in prices of 16% and 26% compared to 2021. In addition, as regards eel, the low availability of juvenile fish, the so-called blind eel, has a further impact on the price increase, which has exceeded 15.00 euros/kg. On the other hand, the wholesale price of squid (coming mainly from the North Sea in recent months) has remained stable, although a slight increase of +2% compared to 2021 was observed in the weeks near Christmas.
