The total amount spent on Christmas presents in 2022 is €7.4 billion, yet more than one-fourth (29%) will be recycled to friends and family or sold on the internet. This is what comes out of the first balance that Coldiretti/IXÈ did on holiday shopping. It shows that there is a new trend among citizens, which is also driven by the fact that a lot of people are having financial problems because of the war in Ukraine. Most people who recycle do it for family and friends who will appreciate the gift. A good number of pragmatic people (31%) return them to the store by exchanging them or asking for a voucher, while 18% sell them on the Internet. Food and wine, which can always be consumed, have the lowest "recycling" rates, whereas clothes, home goods, and technology are at the greatest danger. It is consequently reaffirmed again this year, according to Coldiretti, that there is a drive toward practical presents, and that inside the family, among relatives and friends, we prefer to choose things or services that were unavailable throughout the year. Along with books and music, food, toys, and clothing and accessories make up the top three spots on the podium for most popular gift ideas.
