An Italian woman, also holding a US passport, was rescued by Kenyan police officers after being briefly held hostage by suspected terrorists. The abduction took place at a checkpoint near the town of Witu, on Kenya's coastline, about 250 kilometers from the Somali border. The officers, traveling from Garsen to the north, encountered a checkpoint set up by suspected Al-Shabaab militiamen disguised as Kenyan army soldiers, as reported in The Star newspaper. After a firefight, the criminals fled to Boni's forest. Subsequently, the agents discovered the Italian citizen and three other people who had been detained at the checkpoint. Police also found the bodies of two people killed by militants. One officer reported that, prior to the arrival of the police, the terrorist suspects had already stopped four vehicles.
