In comparison with other European countries, Italy is one of those with the lowest number of homicides. Taking into account the number of murders per 100,000 people, the rate in Italy is 0.6, in Germany it is 0.9, in the United Kingdom it is 1.2, and in France it is 1.4. Only in Switzerland and Norway is the situation better. As for the cities, in Milan and Rome the rate is equal to that of the national average and is higher, in Europe, only to those of Madrid and Porto. This is one of the statistics featured in the 2022 report on crimes, fugitives, and arrests in Italy that is released annually by the Italian criminal police. The Central Directorate of the Criminal Police (also known as Criminalpol) is an inter-force institution comprised of the State Police, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, and security experts from across the globe. The head of the criminal police, who is also the deputy director general of the Department of Public Security at the Ministry of the Interior, Vittorio Rizzi, explained that "this year the data of the Central Directorate of the Criminal Police are significant because they refer to a specific year, that of recovery after the pandemic." There was a modest (+ 3%) rise in the total number of crimes committed in Italy between January 1, 2022 and November 30, 2022, compared to the same period in 2021. However, the absolute numbers are still fewer than they were at the same time in 2019, the year before the epidemic. Cybercrime, which had obviously increased during the Covid lockdown, decreased by 15%.
