It will be necessary for search engines to remove references to people who were acquitted from online news articles about investigations that went viral. It is one of the new laws that went into effect in Italy on January 1st. It is stipulated under the "Right to be forgotten of defendants and individuals under investigation" statute, which was passed by the Draghi administration last year. "The person against whom a judgment of acquittal or non-prosecution or a filing order has been pronounced by the court may request that indexing be barred or that the de-indexing on the Internet of personal data reported in the judgment or in the measure be ordered". An important concept of extraterritoriality of the protection of personal data was established in November by a ruling of the Court of Cassation, which argued that an order granted by an Italian guarantor authority to "remove" from search engines a news that is no longer current must apply to all online versions spread around the globe, and not only those in the European Union.
