The mayor of Bari, Antonio Decaro, announced that in 2023 the subscription to public transport will go from 250 to 20 euros per year, making Bari the first Italian city in terms of savings on transport. The main objective is to encourage people who live and work in Bari to move by public transport instead of by car. Decaro also explained that it is a question of "meeting the budgets of families" at a time when the cost of energy has risen considerably, and made it clear that he expects from this project a significant reduction in traffic, with positive consequences also at the environmental level. As the mayor explained, the initiative will cost 5 million euros and will be financed with funds from the European Union. There was also some criticism of Bari's proposal: Beppe Sala, mayor of Milan, where transport costs the most in Italy, called it demagogic, arguing that "it would be a huge mistake", too expensive for the Municipalities. In Milan, from January 9, the cost of the ticket for a bus or metro ride will increase from 2 to 2.20 euros, although the cost of the subscription will remain unchanged.
