Most Italians wouldn't dream of serving insects at their dinner table since they're not a part of the country's traditional cuisine. This is the conclusion of a Coldiretti/IXE' study based on the European Union's permission to sell Acheta domesticus, or domestic cricket, in partly defatted powder as a novel food, as published in the Community Official Journal. 54% of Italians are opposed to eating insects at the table, while 24% are indifferent, 16% are in favor, and 6% do not react. The sale of insects for culinary purposes is now permitted in Europe, according to the implementation of the EU legislation on "novel foods" on January 1, 2018, which permits entire insects to be recognized as both new foods and traditional goods from foreign nations.
