Enel and Costa Cruises have signed a contract to cut emissions when cruise ships enter and exit ports and make dock stops. To reduce emissions during port entrance, berthing, and departure, a "pilot case" of naval refitting will be carried out, which involves implementing technical improvement interventions on an existing operational ship. This will include the installation of a battery power, paired with a power supply and electric charging system from the ground. The goal of the refitting is to make a Costa cruise ship emission-free from the moment it docks to the moment it sails away, including the time it spends docked. The agreement also calls for the development of advocacy activities to simplify and stimulate energy efficiency, electrification, and the generation of renewable energy in urban ports. One of the activities is called "cold ironing," which means supplying ships with electricity through the land network while they are in port. Cruise ships are already getting ready for this, with about a third of the Costa fleet already ready, before "cold ironing" projects are built in the main Italian and Mediterranean ports, which have not happened yet.
