According to a research conducted by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Made in Italy in 2022, 21% of the Italian population purchased a fake cosmetic at least once, and 12.9% did it on purpose. A survey by the OECD and EUIPO that examines the period 2017-2019 reveals that 56% of counterfeit items seized in Europe originate from online sales and e-commerce in particular. In Italy, the effect of counterfeit cosmetics is 11.9% of the industry's revenue, or 935 million euros in annual lost sales. Despite this, the cosmetics industry is expanding rapidly. According to Confindustria, in 2021 Italian cosmetics recorded a total turnover of 11 billion and 810 million euros, exceeding by 9.9% that of 2020, with 59% of production destined for the domestic market while 41% of the same for exports with a greater focus on Germany, the United States and France.
