The airline ITA, born from the bankruptcy of Alitalia, has been flying since October 2021 and in its first year of activity has carried 9 million passengers. Now, however, in order to survive, it needs a strong industrial partner. In the decree of December 22, the government - which through the MInistry of Economy and Finance (MEF) holds 100% of the former Alitalia - asks a buyer "able to acquire an initial stake in the company" that is "of such an entity as to confirm the seriousness of the commitment", with a view to subsequently holding "control or majority of the capital". The most anticipated offer is that of Lufthansa, which came into play after the option that had been granted to the Certares fund in a commercial alliance with Air-France expired at the end of October without becoming an agreement between the parties. A few weeks ago the CEO of the German carrier, Carsten Spohr, reiterated the interest in the acquisition of Ita. “Not only would it open up new prospects in the aviation sector for Lufthansa, but also for Italy.” The German giant could start with a 40% stake and then go up and get the majority of the shares. For Lufthansa, the acquisition of ITA would be a way to expand its reach in Southern Europe and, in projection, to Africa and Latin America, which are destinations historically covered by Alitalia. The game is open, the government has set its conditions, now they are waiting for Lufthansa's moves.
