The general public security situation in our country in the year just ended was not really satisfactory despite the usual, appreciated commitment of the police forces. This is what emerges from the report, albeit partial and provisional, presented at the Viminale by the Central Directorate of Criminal Police, which recorded in 2022 a 19.7% increase in theft in general (many those in homes) compared to 2021, robberies of 18.2%, pickpockets of 12%, fraud against the elderly. Sexual violence also increased by 16% (the figure refers to the first ten months of 2022), while the 14.3% increase in minors reported and arrested for various crimes is a legitimate concern. The only data that makes Italy “one of the safest countries in Europe” is given by the number of voluntary homicides: 310 in 2022 (12 more than in 2021), with a rate of 0.6% per hundred thousand inhabitants that places our country second only to Norway and Switzerland. Over the past fifteen years, the homicide curve has steadily declined since 1990, when it hit its highest ever value of 3,012.
