After the announcement by the Vatican of the reopening of the investigation into the death of Emanuela Orlandi, the Corriere della Sera paper published an interview with Ali Agca, the attacker of Pope Wojtyla who today lives in Istanbul with his Italian wife Elena Rossi. On the Vatican's willingness to reopen the case, Agca says: “Surely there is a willingness on the part of Pope Francis to make clear what happened. However, we must not forget Mirella Gregori because the two kidnappings are linked. One does not exist without the other and neither would have existed without the assassination attempt on the Pope. Francis told Pietro Orlandi that Emanuela is in heaven. Agca also links the event to the death of Pope Ratzinger that, in his opinion, has “changed the internal balance of the Vatican.” "Inside the Vatican - affirms Agca - there is a real civil war between opposing factions and groups and I believe that the decision to reopen the Orlandi case fits within this context". On the fate of Emanuela Orlandi, Agca still claims to know what happened: “Emanuela Orlandi was not kidnapped by any crime or terrorism. It was at the center of an unprecedented intrigue to secure my release in 1983. I must publicly cry out to the Vatican summit: free Emanuela Orlandi from the cloistered convent where she lives and prays serenely”.
