The Memorandum of Understanding for the candidacy of the “Via Appia. Regina Viarum” on the UNESCO World Heritage List was signed in Rome, at the Baths of Diocletian. The ancient consular road, about 900 km long from Rome to Brindisi, including the Trajanic variant, represents not only the prototype of the Roman road system, but it is also the millennial symbol of the relations between the civilizations of the Mediterranean and those of the East and of Africa. The project, which is promoted directly by the Ministry of Culture through its central and peripheral offices, involves 4 Regions (Lazio, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia), 12 territorial bodies between Provinces and Metropolitan Cities, 73 Municipalities, 15 National Parks, the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology and 25 Italian and foreign universities. The Ministry is investing in the restoration and enhancement of archaeological and architectural evidence located along the path of the Via Appia. The aim is to combine the reasons for the conservation and enhancement of this important heritage with the sustainable development of the territories involved. On January 20 the candidacy will be evaluated by the Executive Board of the UNESCO Italian National Commission. Subsequently, the request will be sent to Paris.
